Had a great day covering the Grand Prix Cycliste event in Montreal.

Canon lenses

Is there a big difference in the quality of photos taking with a Canon 50mm lens that cost $129 vs their big pro 24-70L lens?  Both photos where shot at the same time on two seperate Canon 1D bodies on Sandisk CF cards. no post processing simply converted form RAW to JPEG in Canon Photo  Pro and croped in Photo Mechanic.

The top photo was shot with Canon's EF 50mm  1.8f  lens

The bottom photo was shot with Canon's EF 24-70mm L 2.8f lens.

I was surprised at how little difference there was between the two, on occasions I have noticed my L lens to be sharper, but under ideal conditions the 50mm lens does as great job, it is smaller, lighter, much cheaper ans has a better auto focus than the bulkier and heavier L lens. so i will keep using my 50mm lens for my newspaper photos and take out my 24-70L for special events.  In most cases my little $129 50mm lens does the job.
