The Swamp  available online at Amazon, makes a great gift idea,  I wanted to share the beauty I discovered  of local wetlands in all seasons. Wetlands sustain more life than any ecosystem in the world. As much as many tropical forests and more than the most fertile of farmlands.

Shooting wildlife photos

Shooting wildlife photos takes patience, waiting hours to get the shot you want.  That is why I love these little 3 foot stools. Compact, lightweight, and cheap, under $10.  I bring one with me on all my wetland shoots, along with my camera gear and monopod.

Spring migration

Waiting for the geese to arrive.

Once the snow starts to leave, I wait impatiently for the arrival of the first geese of the season. This photo was shot last year on April 25th, so I still have a few days to wait to catch this years flock.

Beaver lodge

Wetlands may seem dormant in the winter, but under the snow and ice beavers are present.

Beavers used sticks to build their lodge and mud for insulation and waterproofing.   Beavers don't hibernate, but are less active in the winter, lowering their metabolism by spending most of their time resting in their lodge.  They do prepare a cache of sticks to eat all winter.

Yesterday's photo shoot, a mother goose and young goslings following her. She started with four last week, now her family seems to have expanded!

Shot with my Canon 1D and a 70-200 mm lens at 200mm and a 2X Canon teleconverter for a 400mm shot. I shot a a high ISO 640 here, to give me extra speed  1/800 second  in this case.

Lac Saint-Pierre

Lac Saint-Pierre is a lake in Quebec, located on the Saint Lawrence River near  Trois-Rivières, downstream  of  Montreal. Including its shoreline, and wetlands, the lake is a nature reserve.

This seasonally-flooded area is an important stopping point for hundreds of thousands of migrating waterfowl. It is also an important nesting area for herons, more have been counted here than in any other place in North America. In 1998, it was recognized as a wetland of international significance under the Ramsar Convention..Lac Saint-Pierre was designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 2000..
